Chinese Pole

Chinese Pole being a circus act may date back even further than the 12th century. They use very long steel pole to display climbing, sliding down and holding amazing strength and stretch positions. Chinese pole advances exercises include the “Flag” with pushups and full circle plus the Sky Scraper. They wear pants, shoes and coat the poles using a gripping sleeve to help with their clothing material and grip however this rubber leaves burn marks on the Chinese pole performers’ shoulders. Our vertical pole gymnastics program has eliminated this problem.

Pole Dancing
What is Pole Dancing?

Pole Dancing originated in the 1920s at the height of American depression. Travelling fairs would go from town to town entertaining the crowds. As part of the fair there would be many different types of sides shows in small tents surrounding the main tent. One particular tent housed the “erotic Hoochi Coochi”dancers. The word “Hoochi Choochi” originates from the hip movements performed by the dancers on a small stage in front of crowds of cheering beer drinkers.
Due to the size of the tent, the pole would be situated at the very edge of the stage and dancers would approach the tent pole and begin to dance with it. These kinds of tricks and pole is not used for Ariel Pole Gymnastics / Pole Fitness Program.
Pole Dancing gradually began evolving from tent to bars as burlesque became more acceptable in the 1950s. In the 1980s when “striptease” (a modern version of belly dance) became popular in Canada and the USA – they started combining striptease with simple theme costume and circus acts like flame-throwing, ribbon and aerial gymnastics.

Pole Mallakhamb

Pole Mallakhamb is a natural form of exercise where you use your own body weight to improve your strength and power. There is no external weight or force acting over the body like weightlifting or wrestling. Vertical Pole is the only apparatus in which one gets full body torque (rotate or twist) thus it helps to fully develop & tone the entire body including the backbone. Making this the mother discipline that builds an ideal physical body. Dating back to 250 years to an Indian sport called “Mallakhamb” or – gymnastics pillar also known as Yogasana (meaning Yoga on Pole).

Pole Fitness vs Pole Dancing
What's Pole Fitness?

Our program at PFS® practices the many unique grips and techniques required to safely stay on the pole (Ariel Pole Gymnastics) – with no dance affiliation at all! Differences between the Mallakhamb and Chinese pole include outfit and equipment. With Pole Mallakhamb’s equipment design restrictions their pole climbers hold limited skills and are masters at pole flips. Pole Fitness is a training method that combines and updates both these techniques with addition of our spinning pole apparatus – at PFS® we make it easier to learn and do pole gymnastics than ever before.
